Scandal fans saw a series regular get murdered in Thursday’s episode of the ABC political drama, as the Mystery Woman (Zoe Perry), swinging a golf club, killed Mellie’s high-powered chief of staff Elizabeth “Lizzie” North (Portia de Rossi) in Thursday’s episode.
Murder is nothing new on Scandal, known for its outrageous plot twists over six seasons, but de Rossi’s Lizzie marks the rare death of a long-running character who first appeared on the show in Season 4.
#Scandal was trending at the top of Twitter after Thursday’s East Coast broadcast with fan reaction. One viewer with inside information — talk-show titan Ellen DeGeneres, who is married to de Rossi — lamented the loss of “Lizzie Bear” but celebrated “Portia Bear.”
In a statement, de Rossi said she will miss Elizabeth but is leaving to focus on an unspecified new project: “I am incredibly grateful for my time here at Scandal. I will miss playing Elizabeth North but I’ve made the decision to focus on a business opportunity.” She said executive producers Shonda Rhimes and Betsy Beers, along with the cast “have been incredibly supportive of my decision. I will always love my Scandal family. I’ll be watching!”
Scandal creator Shonda Rhimes saluted de Rossi for her contribution to the political drama, which features Kerry Washington as top fixer Olivia Pope.
“I have been a fan of Portia’s for years and it was an honor to have her join our Scandal family. Portia infused Liz North with a smart, powerful, vulnerable soul while also making the humor sing — and that brought all of us in the writers room a lot of joy,” Rhimes said. “If I could keep her forever, I would — but kidnapping is illegal. Besides, I am incredibly impressed with the vision she has for her creative future. I wish her all the best.”
